Our next evening for Spirituality in the Pub will be held at Gardners Inn, Blackheath as usual, on Wednesday evening 11th June at 7.30pm. Our guest speakers are Mary ­Louise Petro and John Martin. Our theme for the year is "Journeys from the Edge".

Guest Speakers:

Sister Mary-Louise Petro

Mary-Louise is a teacher by profession and having felt a call to become a Sister of Mercy spent her early years teaching at OLMC Parramatta and OLMC Epping. Twenty-five years ago she was invited to become a youth worker at St Marys and St Clair in Western Sydney. It was a time of high youth unemployment and her team began to look for ways to constructively assist the situation. From these humble beginnings The Mamre Project at St Marys was conceived and brought to reality. The project now assists people with disabilities, youth at risk of not finishing Year 10 at school, long term unemployed and most recently Sudanese refugee families.

John Martin

John Martin is a Clinical Psychologist who started his career as a Psychologist in a Drugs and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centre. John has worked for the Salvation Army and during that time he developed a National HIV/AIDS program for Bangladesh. He was a member of the Salvation Army International Headquarters Technical Assistance Team and initiated a process to develop a response to HIV/AIDS that is appropriate to the culture of South Asia. He has worked for Save the Children-UK and Sweden. John has been working with Fr Chris Riley's Youth Off the Streets for the past five years. He began as Manager of the Airds Outreach Program, working with the most disadvantaged young people in Western Sydney. He is now Group Manager for Community Development with Youth Off The Streets and manages six community development programs.

Our next evening for Spirituality in the Pub will be held at Gardners Inn, Blackheath as usual, on Wednesday evening, 9th April at 7.30pm. Our guest speakers are Bernice Moore and Br. Julian McDonald, AO. Our theme for the year is "Journeys from the Edge".
Guest Speakers:
Bernice Moore
Bernice is a teacher by profession having taught in secondary education in the Catholic Education system. She has a Masters Degree in Women's Studies from the University of NSW. In the early 90's she was asked to coordinate the organization Women and the Australian Church (Watac). Watac was established in 1984 as a means of changing the understanding of the role of women in the Australian Church and in society. It was initiated by the women Religious within the Catholic Church but has now expanded to include laywomen and men. Although Catholic by origin, it encourages membership from other religious denominations. For some years Bernice has been one of the Catholic representatives on the Gender Commission of the National Council of Churches in Australia.

Br. Julian McDonald, AO
Br Julian joined the Congregation of Christian Brothers in 1960 and has had a distinguished career as an educator both in secondary schooling and tertiary education. He is currently Chancellor of Australian Catholic University after having been Pro-Chancellor for five years. Br Julian was the Director of the Christian Brothers from 1990 to 2002, and has recently been appointed to the Oceania Leadership Team of the Christian Brothers. In 2001 he received the Pro Merito Melitensi award from the Knights of Malta and in 2003 and was admitted as an Officer in the Order of Australia for services to Religious Life, the Christian Brothers and Education. He has a particular interest in Children's Literature and is currently completing a Master of Education Degree at Charles Sturt University in the field of Children's literature.

Our next evening for Spirituality in the Pub will be held at Gardners Inn, Blackheath as usual, on Wednesday evening, 13th February at 7.30pm. Our guest speakers are Dr Sabine Erika and Professor Tony Vinson. Our theme for the year is "Journeys from the Edge".

Guest Speakers:

Dr Sabine Erika

Dr Sabine Erika was born in Germany and came to Australia as a refugee with her parents. She studied politics and history at Macquarie University and the University of NSW. She was to lecture in History, Politics and Women's Studies at Macquarie University for eighteen years. Her activities over the years have included co-running a house for disabled adults as well as running a theatre for disabled people for ten years. She is currently running Alternative to Violence Workshops in jails and with parolees, is President of the local Zonta Club, which works for the human rights of women and is a member of the Anti-Trafficking Network, which works for rescued women slaves. A lifelong pacifist and activist for human rights she is also Clerk of Blue Mountains Quaker meetings

Professor Tony Vinson

Tony Vinson is one of Australia's leading social scientists and outspoken public intellectuals. His career spans the disciplines of social work, social policy, psychology, education, and public administration and social research. Early in his career he was appointed Foundation Professor in Behavioural Science within the new Medical School at the University of Newcastle. Following three years as Head of the NSW Department of Corrective Services during a period of intense penal reform he took up an appointment as Professor of Social work at the University of New South Wales. In recent years he has had an extensive involvement in assessing schemes to protect children exposed to the dangers of abuse. He received an AM in this years Australia Day Honours for services to social welfare through academic, government and community roles, as a contributor to state and federal policy formulation, and as a champion of social justice.
